"I don't remember the time when my father came to India," said Mauindra Das of Assam's Silchar village. I was young at that time. At that time I was just a little boy of four years old. Mauindra Das is a refugee who came to India in 1964 and lived in a camp. When he grew up and learned this fact, his father gave him a refugee card and he kept that card very carefully. There are many people like Mauindra Das living in that area. His story is also like that of Mauindra Das. Those facing this problem are both Hindus and Muslims. In the movement of 1970, such people were revolted under the name Go Back Foreigner. After this protest, an explanation was given in Assam that those who came before 1971 or before the Bangladesh war will be declared Indians and those who came later will be declared foreigners. After learning about the people in the Silchar region of Assam for a long time, he was given a notice. Those who got notice as Indian were very happy and those who got notice of foreigner were surprised.
The people there also said that now everyone has a birth certificate. What was not there before. In 1997, there were about 313,000 such cases, but even after 27 years, there are 96,987 cases in 2024. Most of those whose cases have been decided have been declared Indians. Among them there are those who were called foreigners. Even those whose cases were decided, those who were declared aliens were kept in separate places. Later they were asked to go to the police station with their documents. They were taken to the police station in a police vehicle and kept in jail. Some even say that I was able to reunite with my father after a year during the lockdown. Due to this, people lost a lot of money.
In order to get bail, the family borrowed a lot of money from their relatives. Because they could not afford it, the youth of his family gave up their studies. Experts said that we tried to understand the law and consulted many lawyers. They said that declaring a d-voter is one-sided and arbitrary. There was no proper communication between the different departments of the government. Something went wrong with this. As Mounindra das votes even if he is declared a foreigner. He is declared a foreigner even if his family members are Indians. Due to this d-voter and his family members have to face a lot of problems. When BJP formed the government in 2014, there was a belief among the people that their problems could be solved. From 2014 to 2024, nothing could be done in these 10 years. Due to which there is no more hope among the people there.
